Then you’ll want to read this honest and insightful advice from one of my recent clients, one week into recovery after undergoing an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and liposuction.
While every recovery is unique, these personal tips offer a valuable guide to navigating the early days post-surgery. If you're preparing for surgery or supporting someone who is, this real-world insight could make all the difference.
If it’s an option, stay overnight at the clinic. Yes, it may cost extra, but the benefits are worth it. Regular monitoring, access to a nurse and the use of leg compression pumps help support lymphatic drainage, circulation, and can speed up recovery while preventing blood clots.
Don’t underestimate how much rest your body needs. Giving yourself time off ensures a safer and more comfortable recovery. This isn’t the time to push through – your healing depends on it.
You won’t be able to shower right away. My client had her sister clean her with a scented towel, which helped her feel fresh without compromising the healing process.
Leave these on for at least 7 days. The belly button can take up to 4-6 weeks to heal – often longer than the tummy tuck area itself – so keeping it protected from bacteria is crucial.
Don’t let the pain catch up with you. Stay ahead of it by following your medication schedule carefully.
Too much movement too soon can set you back. Avoid stairs and resist the urge to “get back to normal” quickly.
Large meals can feel uncomfortable, especially around the abdominal area. Small, protein-rich meals help support healing. Consider supplements like Vitamin C, zinc, and selenium.
A gentle walk post-meal can aid digestion and help prevent bloating or discomfort.
Water is essential to recovery. Your lymphatic fluid is made up of around 90% water, so staying hydrated supports detoxification and reduces swelling.
Avoid straining your core. Use your arms and legs to help you sit up, lie down, or get out of bed. If you can, build arm strength before your operation.
Avoid coughing at all costs – it hurts! Keep cough sweets on hand just in case. Breathwork can help manage pain; practising it beforehand can be a game changer.
Yes, you read that right. Tell your friends and family: no funny business! Sudden movements, laughter, or crying can put pressure on your midsection and slow recovery.
Lymphatic drainage massage is key to a smooth recovery, especially after liposuction. Book massage slots in advance – good therapists are often fully booked, weeks ahead.
These help support internal healing and reduce bruising and swelling. Always consult with your healthcare provider before adding any supplements.
Protect your surgical area. Wash lower half, underarms, and back only. Use a clean towel or sponge to freshen up midsection. Moisture can lead to infection, especially around healing incisions.
In the first five days post-liposuction, you may feel a fizzing or bubbling sensation. This is normal and a sign your body is healing.
Sleep and downtime are your best friends. Don’t fight it – embrace the rest.
Skip processed sugary snacks. Opt for fruit, especially oranges – a great source of natural Vitamin C, which boosts collagen and healing.
Get measured for the correct compression, it key for recovery, preventing seromas and fluid build up. Have at least two garments so you can wash them and wear one constantly.
A huge thank you to my client for sharing her experience so openly. This kind of transparency is exactly what we need more of in the world of cosmetic surgery – real talk about recovery and what to expect.
